I used to pay to NOT carry my own bags

Hi Reader,

I got back to Prague from the US late Sunday night. About 20 hours earlier, I'd left Reno with 2 pieces of checked luggage, flown through Portland and London, and finally made it home. I waited at the baggage claim until all the bags came through the carousel. Oh no! Only one piece of luggage showed up.

At first, I was genuinely upset. Why wasn't my Tile tracker working when I actually needed it? How could one suitcase make the journey and not the other? Why did I now have to spend extra time at the airport filling out claim forms when I just wanted to go home?

But then I remembered something. When I lived in Japan, I used to pay for a luggage delivery service to take my bags to and from the airport so I wouldn't have to navigate public transit with them. I paid for that convenience happily! This situation wasn't quite the same — I didn't know where my luggage was — but thinking about it reframed my upset. There wasn't really anything urgent in that missing suitcase. I didn't want to lose the items I'd bought for myself and friends, but I felt pretty confident I'd get my bag back eventually. After a good night's sleep, things didn't look so grim.

I have to remind myself often about perspective. The way you look at something changes your experience of it. Everything is a story. What I mean is: what you decide to focus on, what you decide to retell, how you decide to retell it, all of that affects how you feel about it.

Five years ago, I didn't know that. Or maybe I didn't believe it. But now, after my coaching work, both individual coaching and coach training, I understand the power of thoughts and intention.

If you're still trying to figure out the relationship between your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions and results, I can help. All you have to do is schedule a one-time clarity session with me. We'll focus on one place where you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed, or how to make progress in a situation or with a goal.

Ready to shift your story? Book here.

Joyfully,
Damianne

Hi Reader, As we get into December, I’ve been thinking about how mixed this time of year can feel. I don’t know if it’s the same for you, but November is always a bit heavy for me. My grandmother passed away at the end of November ten years ago, and that still sits with me. And then last week, a friend of mine (who was one of the teachers in my high school) died just a few days before her 80th birthday. I’m glad I got to see her when I was in Canada last month, but it still hit hard. So yes,...

Hi Reader, At 10 p.m., when I’m normally washing my face before debating whether to read one more page of my current book, I suddenly got a burst of energy. The kind of spark that says, “Not tonight… tonight we’re going down a rabbit hole.” Since I’ve been thinking about spending time in Asia again, I thought I’d just take a quick peek at flight prices. You already know how this goes. Five minutes turned into a deep dive into new countries, safety research, regional culture, and cost...
