How Will You Show Up This Holiday Season?

Hi Reader,

Are you spending time with family in the coming weeks? Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, enjoying national holidays, or simply taking advantage of shared time off, setting an intention for how you’ll show up can make all the difference.

I recently returned to work after 10 days with family and friends. Though I live in Prague, I’m originally from St. Lucia. This year, my dad decided to escape the Ottawa winter and spend a few months in St. Lucia. I joined him for a working holiday—an experience that was both new and rewarding.

It was our first time living or traveling together, just the two of us. Much of our time revolved around food, family stories, and even discussions about his financial future as he prepares for retirement. These candid conversations deepened our connection.

Growing up, my relationship with my dad was challenging. But a few years ago, I decided to rewrite our story by showing up differently—speaking honestly when it matters, setting healthy boundaries, and approaching our differences with curiosity and respect. For example, when conversations turn to politics, I share my views openly without trying to change his mind. I focus on understanding him while revealing a bit more of myself.

One tool that’s helped me is the VIEW framework from Art of Accomplishment: Vulnerability, Impartiality, Empathy, and Wonder.

  • Vulnerability: Be open and share authentically.
  • Impartiality: Let go of needing to be “right.”
  • Empathy: Seek to understand the other person’s feelings.
  • Wonder: Approach conversations with curiosity.

As you gather with loved ones, reflect on your recent interactions. Which of these qualities were present? Which would you like more of in your relationships?

Here’s a small challenge for your next family dinner:

  • Ask open questions. Instead of leading or accusatory questions, try “What’s been bringing you joy lately?” or “How did that make you feel?” Notice how the tone of your conversations shifts.
  • Be playful. How can you make the experience 10% more fun?

It’s easy to slip into old family roles, but intentional conversations can create meaningful change. This holiday, focus on connection, curiosity, and joy.

Hi Reader, Have you ever found yourself somewhere so unexpected, so out-of-the-ordinary, that you had to pause and ask: “What does this say about what’s possible for me?” A few weeks ago, I found myself wandering the golden deserts of the Middle East. I was in Dubai, Muscat, and Doha. These are places where you can find sand that stretches as far as the eye can see, yet humans have built glittering cities, lush gardens, and even reclaimed land from the sea. But the moment that truly stopped...

Hi Reader, Has this ever happened to you? You tell yourself you’ll do something, write, call, start, finish, and then… nothing. Three weeks have passed since my last newsletter, and every day I’ve thought, “today’s the day” but something held me back. Well, this morning, I got curious about it. Rather than punishing myself or forcing myself, I decided to play with this resistance. What would happen if I started to write, from the place I am in right now, being in my body? What if I didn't...

Hi Reader, Sometimes, we say we want something different for ourselves and our lives, but then we let days, weeks, months, even years go by without any changes. It's like we're just watching our lives pass us by. That dream you have, that change you want, how long has it been? Are you any closer to it? To turn dreams in reality, dreaming is the first step. It's an important step, but don't stop there. Once you have a dream, start taking action. It doesn't matter how small the steps are. If...
