Have you ever felt trapped by all the shoulds in your life? You know, those persistent thoughts about how things should be, how others should behave, or how you should live your life?

Last month, I had an enlightening conversation with another life coach, Amanda Hess, about how these shoulds might be blocking our access to joy. Amanda shares her personal journey from struggling with emotional challenges to becoming a coach who helps others find self-love and acceptance.

Here are three of my key takeaways from the interview:

  • "Should" thinking often comes from trying to control things we can't control
  • When we're stuck in shoulds, we miss the beauty and joy in what actually is
  • Breaking free from shoulds opens up space for more authentic connections

The thing is that many of our shoulds sound perfectly fine. "I should call my parents". "I should go to be earlier". Those may sound fine, but what kind of energy does thinking in this way create for you? What if you could do the same actions but from a place of want, interest, connection?

When you have a deeper why, taking the same actions can be full of delight and curiosity rather than obligation and resentment. So this week, can you loosen some of the shoulds in your life to access this emotion?

If you're ready to break free from "should" thinking and create more joy in your life? I'd love to support you on that journey. Visit https://changesbigandsmall.com/get-coaching/ to learn more about working together.

Joyfully,
Damianne

Hi Reader, Have you ever found yourself somewhere so unexpected, so out-of-the-ordinary, that you had to pause and ask: “What does this say about what’s possible for me?” A few weeks ago, I found myself wandering the golden deserts of the Middle East. I was in Dubai, Muscat, and Doha. These are places where you can find sand that stretches as far as the eye can see, yet humans have built glittering cities, lush gardens, and even reclaimed land from the sea. But the moment that truly stopped...

Hi Reader, Has this ever happened to you? You tell yourself you’ll do something, write, call, start, finish, and then… nothing. Three weeks have passed since my last newsletter, and every day I’ve thought, “today’s the day” but something held me back. Well, this morning, I got curious about it. Rather than punishing myself or forcing myself, I decided to play with this resistance. What would happen if I started to write, from the place I am in right now, being in my body? What if I didn't...

Hi Reader, Sometimes, we say we want something different for ourselves and our lives, but then we let days, weeks, months, even years go by without any changes. It's like we're just watching our lives pass us by. That dream you have, that change you want, how long has it been? Are you any closer to it? To turn dreams in reality, dreaming is the first step. It's an important step, but don't stop there. Once you have a dream, start taking action. It doesn't matter how small the steps are. If...
